IMHO- Along with 1968, 1967 was a good year for QC from what I have seen. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. If you find a set from that era with the newer style hardware (in chrome) and the clear (not reso-coated) interiors they are tough to beat. The pinnacle before the whole combo musical instrument industry exploded.
And as mentioned the raw maple interior bass just kills and the brass hoops give an extra warmth. But, what the Luddy Huggers agree on is very interesting to me. They seem in agreement that the big early Ringo period produced some of the worst Ludwigs. The Slingerlands and SlingerLeedy drums from the same period seem to be some of the most durable and best sounding Ive encountered. As great as the Beavertail Radio King lug drums are, the introduction of the sticksaver hoops and sound King lugs in 1956 improved the drums a whole lot. One thing about Slingerland production is that they were always capabale of turning out the occasional turd of a drum. That same low pont in Ludwig manufacturing was another high point for Rogers drums. Rogers consistency was unparallelled from what I have learned. Agree with K.O. Im partial to the 62 Champagnes as far as smoothness and flatness of edges, overall clean workmanship, tonal qualities and ease of tuning. And I think its fair to mention that this is all in terms of CONSISTENCY. Is it more likely that theres going to be something funky going on Sure. ![]() ![]() But you know what, it sounds better than the floor toms that were on my,, and kits, all of which were build more precisely. Ive never really liked mahogany shells from any company, let alone Ludwig. ![]() Some of the best sounding kits ever made were produced during that era. Transition badge kits 58 - 59 are ALL great, killer looking and killer sounding kits. John. I really like 1964-1966 because of the white interiors and wood putty filler that Ludwig was know to use for hiding the gaps.
